The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity, but what do we mean by equity, and how is it different to equality?

As we gear up to celebrate International Women’s Day 2023 with the theme of #EmbraceEquity, it’s crucial that we focus on highlighting the difference between equality and equity, and understand why equity is critical in the workplace.

Understanding the Difference Between Equity and Equality

Equality is all about treating everyone the same, irrespective of their individual needs and circumstances. But in practice, this approach doesn’t work for everyone. Not everyone has the same starting point, and not everyone faces the same barriers to success.

That’s where equity comes in – it’s about giving everyone what they need to thrive. This means acknowledging and addressing differences in background, identity, and circumstance to ensure that everyone has the support they need to succeed. Fairness isn’t about treating everyone the same; it’s about treating everyone equitably.

The Importance of Equity in Supporting Women in the Workplace

Gender equity in the workplace isn’t just a moral imperative – it’s also good for business. Research by McKinsey shows that companies with diverse and inclusive workforces outperform their less diverse counterparts. But women face unique challenges and barriers that can make it tough for them to advance in their careers, including bias, discrimination, and a lack of access to resources and opportunities. Without equity, women may struggle to succeed in the workplace despite their talents and qualifications.

Diversity brings a range of perspectives and experiences to the table, which is crucial for businesses to come up with innovative ideas and solutions. People from different backgrounds tend to approach problems from different angles, resulting in unique insights. As a result, companies that prioritise gender equity tend to be more adaptable and able to respond to changes in the market.

Strategies for Promoting Equity in the Workplace

To truly embrace equity in the workplace, companies need to create an environment that supports diversity and promotes gender equity. This can include offering flexible work arrangements, providing mentorship opportunities, and implementing policies that promote work-life balance. But often, even with the best of intentions, leaders and managers unintentionally perpetuate biases and reinforce the status quo.

One way to promote equity in the workplace is through targeted learning and development opportunities. This can include leadership training for women, mentoring programmes, and diversity and inclusion training for all employees. By giving women the right support and resources they need to succeed, we can help to level the playing field and promote a more equitable workplace.

Another crucial component of equity is ensuring that women have equal access to opportunities for growth and advancement. This means addressing bias in hiring and promotion processes, as well as providing support for women who may be facing barriers to advancement. It also means creating a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion, and actively works to support the success of all employees.

The Ongoing Need for Attention to Equity in the Workplace

Achieving equity in the workplace is an ongoing process that requires continual effort and attention. But the benefits of promoting equity in the workplace are clear. By creating a more equitable workplace, we can support the success of all employees, regardless of their gender, background, or identity.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, let’s remember that equity is not the same as equality. Equity means recognising and addressing differences in background, identity, and circumstance to ensure that everyone has the support they need to succeed. By providing targeted learning and development opportunities, ensuring equal access to opportunities for growth and advancement, and creating a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion, we can help to promote a more equitable workplace for all.
